Oakdene Services has taken delivery of the first LED-UV press in Northern Ireland in the shape of a four-colour RMGT 920 SRA1 press.
The investment is a big stride forwards from the Sakurai Oliver 466 plus coater that it replaces. It doubles the sheet format, cuts makeready times and halves the energy requirements.
“It’s been in production for about a week,” says director Jamie McMullan,“ and it is already two-and-a-half times more productive and it’s not even up to speed yet.” The Newtownabbey company is prepared for some bedding in issues and expects to come across questions that need answering as operators get to grips with the press. “As time goes on, we hope to have three times the output than before running just a single shift,” he says. The signs are good: one minder came in one day, started his shift at 5.50am and had six jobs on the floor by 7.00am. This is necessary as demand for the company’s print services have been rising.
The company has had to invest in a new platesetter to accommodate the larger plate size, continuing with Agfa’s Eclipse develop on press plate. It will also be installing a Komori Apressia 115 guillotine with a shipment date later this month or into August. A temporary machine is enabling the company to cope until then. Further investment in finishing technology is likely in future, says McMullan.
